We have been playing with sensory bins a lot lately at our house and we recently made a batch of colored rice, so I thought I’d share our method with you.
** A special thank you to Sam, my 8-year-old son for taking the pictures. 🙂
Supplies you will need:
- Uncooked rice
- Rubbing alcohol
- Ziploc bags – quart or gallon will work
- Food coloring
Pour 2 Tablespoons of rubbing alcohol into a ziploc bag.
Add 3 drops of food coloring.
Add 1 cup of rice.
Close the bag and shake and squish the rice around until all of it is evenly coated.
Empty the bag and spread the rice out on some paper towel. Let the rice dry for a of couple hours. We made ours in the evening and left it to dry overnight.
And then, play!
{This is our Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Bin}
Double, triple, or quadruple the recipe as desired.
Add more food coloring for bolder colors.
Brilliant idea! My teenage daughter loves to make Onigiri with rice. She was wondering whether you could cook the rice after you color it to make colorful Onigiri. Have you tried cooking it? Does it stain the pan?
How neat! I’ll have to remember this next time i set up a bin.
What a great idea! I am looking for some fun things to do with my younger children this summer, I can’t wait to try coloring rice, I’ve never heard of doing that, thank Sarah!
